学术词汇是指经常出现在学术文本中用以描述学术研究活动和研究成果的词汇。本书是奥尔森三本词汇系列书中的第三本，在第一本《互动词汇》的奠基与第二本《主动词汇》的巩固延伸之下，本书专注于学术词汇的学习与应用。同样地，虽然成书格局与前两本大致相同，但本书仍有其自身的特色与魅力，而其最大的特色便体现在其主题阅读部分的文章选择上。在选择适合本书的阅读材料时，作者不仅尽量避开了一些在用词方面生活化较强的文章，还争取尽可能多的涉及到不同的领域，比如本书所选文章便广泛涉及了数学、生物学、社会学、演讲、外语、地质学、历史、艺术、人类学等不同领域。通过学习这一系列的文章，学生不仅能扩展自身的单词种类与数量，还能提高自身的阅读能力。此外，与《主动词汇》及《互动词汇》相同，本书同样包含了含义预测、自我测验、视觉单词、互动练习以及话题讨论等版块，提高了学生学习英语单词的积极性与主动性，增强了英语单词学习的趣味性，让学术与趣味同行!
