Global Shortage of Fresh Water
Long ago, there was a beautiful planet. Three fourths of its surface was covered with water, andthe rest was land. The fresh water brought up lots of lives. But now, as more and more lives comeinto this world, fresh water will run out one day. People always think that fresh water comes fromrain, rivers, wells and lakes and it will never run out. But in fact, with the development of industry, the growth of population and the destruction of environment, fresh water is being exhausted. Whatshould people do? I think everyone knows the only answer is to save fresh water.
Global Shortage of Fresh Water
People think that fresh water is inexhaustible because they believe there is fresh water inabundance from rainfalls, rivers, lakes and underground sources.
But as a matter of fact, fresh water is insufficient in the world, especially that in China, forvarious reasons. To begin with, the development of industries, especially that in the industrialisedcountries, consumes more and more fresh water. Secondly, farming activities demand more and morefresh water for irrigation. All this is largely due to the ever-growing population that requiresincreasingly greater supply of fresh water. And to make matters worse, fresh water sources areincreasingly getting polluted. As a result, fresh water is becoming scarcer with each passing day.
What can we do, then, to cope with the dwindfing supply of fresh water? We must makeevery effort to economise on fresh water and fight against its waste. In addition, we should recycleindustrial waste water and urban sewage water. Most important of all, we must consistently andpersistently combat against and prevent pollution. Only when all these things are done well can wehave a steady and secure supply of fresh water.
