Dah-an Ho,Speed and Discontinuity:A New Perspective of Phonological HistoryAbstract:This paper deals with the roles of speed and discontinuityin the study of phonological history.By speed and discontinuity,we refer to the rhythm of the historical progress and the shift oflinguistic paradigm,respectively.Developments of final groupsfrom Old Chinese to Middle Chinese are given as evidence.Additionally,it examines previous approaches to the Chinese phonological history,and stresses the importance of the concept of historicityin historical linguistics.Keywords:phonological history,progress,speed,discontinuity,historicity.
