陈立凯，河北省沧州市人。1986年毕业于北京外国语学院（现北京外国语大学）第二英语系。研究方向为应用语言学与英语教学、美国社会与文化、美国文学等。出版了《初级英语语法》（上海科学技术出版社）、《话说美国英语阅读系列》（共三本，南京大学出版社）等，并在美国出版了英语长篇少儿小说Shuislxeng，the Mallarol，发表了英语短篇小说A Late Success。另外，和美国著名心理学者芭芭拉·霍尔斯坦博士合著的系列青少年心理读物（英汉对照）第一册《The Truth——真的我，一个美国女孩的成长经历》也已经出版（西安交通大学出版社）。

    《风情大地：美国各地故事》中的小故事讲述的是美国各地的风土人情和不同民族的生活习惯、历史遗迹、节庆活动等，如为什么要学会和动物和睦相处？“为四万人供应薄煎饼”是怎么回事？故事里说“芬兰人都有sisu”，sisu是什么东西？谁的一生是“充满成就的一生”？“小布朗杯轻便马车赛马”都有什么规矩？美国早期的拓荒者们怎样生活？在明尼苏达州的明尼顿卡湖湖面上怎么会有有轨电车呢？我们都听说过美国西部的蛮荒场景，它究竟是什么样子的？你敢和小猪亲嘴吗？乔治亚州每年举办的一种地方系列戏剧表演为什么叫“美味鱼汤”呢？现如今，文化活动异彩纷呈，但是你见过“癞蛤蟆跳跃比赛”吗？美国阿肯色州的康威市就有。你能想象出乘坐一艘独木舟穿越大洋吗？还有很多鲜为人知的趣闻可以在书中找到。

    1 A Company Town
    公司城
    Whats a“company town”？In case youre not sure，the story of the AmoskeagManufacturing Company in Manchester，New Hampshire，is a good example.
    At the beginning of the 20th century，the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company was the largest maker of cotton cloth in the world.It employed most of the townS peopleand became SO powerful that it even played a big role in city planning.No othermanufacfurers could think about locating their companies in New Hampshire withoutAmoskeag’S permission，because it owned most of the land available for industry.
    At first，only young women worked at the Amoskeag mills.After the Civil War，men were also hired，as were many immigrants.The mills brought great prosperity tothe city.But that prosperity did not last forever.
    After the First World War，many textile mills were located in the South，whichwas closer to the cotton farms and where wages were lower.Eventually，theAmoskeag Company had to lower wages to stay in business，causing the workers tostrike in 1922.The company reopened，but it was not as strong as before.In 1935，itclosed forever，bringing economic disaster2 to the town and its people.

    20世纪初，埃默斯基格纺织公司是世界上最大的棉布织造商。它雇用了曼彻斯特的绝大多数居民，实力十分强大，甚至在该市的规划中也发挥了举足轻重的作用。其他的制造商，如果没有埃默斯基格纺织公司的允许，就别想在新罕布什尔州建厂，因为埃默斯基格纺织公司拥有绝大部分的工业用地。
    刚开始时，只有年轻妇女在埃默斯基格的工厂里工作。内战结束后，埃默斯基格也雇用男性以及许多外来移民。工厂给这个城市带来了繁荣。但是这种繁荣却没能长时间持续下去。
    第一次世界大战后，许多纺织厂都建在了南方，更靠近棉花种植园农场，并且那里工人的薪水更低。最后，埃默斯基格纺织公司不得不降低薪水以避免停业。降低薪水引起了雇员们1922年的罢工。后来，公司又重新开业了，但却不如以前那样实力强大。1935年，埃默斯基格纺织公司终于永久性地停业了。它的停业给曼彻斯特市以及当地居民带来了经济灾难。
    2 Learning How to Work with Animals

    The Thompson School of Applied Science，in Durham，New Hampshire，is partof the University of New Hampshire.ItS a school for people who want to work withanimals，forests or farms.
    One of the departments in the school is the Applied Animal Science Department.Since So many Americans have dogs，cats，and other small animals，itS important tohave people who are trained to care for these animals.Students at the Thompson School can study Small Animal Care.This iS the study of how pets behave and how totrain and groom them.Students also learn what kinds of food dogs and cats should eatand how to keep the animals healthy.Many go on to work with veterinarians orhumane societies or become pet grooms.
    The two other areas in Applied Animal Science are Equine Management and Dairy Management.Equine Management teaches all sorts of subjects related tohorses-everything from riding to physical care of the animals to management of barns and stables.In the Dairy Management program students experience practical，hands-on work with cattle as well as learning about the business of farming.Have youever considered a career with animals？
