劳伦斯（1885-1930），英国短篇小说家、诗人、散文家，20世纪英国最有成就、最有争议的作家之一。出生于英国诺丁汉郡的伊斯特伍德村，从小与母亲关系亲密。1911年母亲去世后，发表了第一部长篇小说《白孔雀》。从1914年起，开始靠写作谋生。1915年完成了其最伟大的、最有代表性的作品之一《虹》，但很快被禁。1920年历经曲折后又发表了《虹》的姊妹篇《恋爱中的女人》。第一次世界大战后，劳伦斯开始寻求一种西方工业文明所无法提供的更加令人满意的生活方式，并开始了旅行生活，于1925年回到欧洲。1928年，他的最后一部小说《查泰莱夫人的情人》遭禁。劳伦斯在近20年的创作生涯中，为世人留下了10多部小说，3本游记，3卷短篇小说集，数本诗集、散文集和书信集及多幅美术作品。
