  海明威(1899-1961),美国著名作家、诺贝尔文学奖获得者。《我的心灵藏书馆:老人与海(英文版)》是他具代表性的作品之一。

  古巴老渔夫圣地亚哥在连续八十四天没捕到鱼的情况下,终于独自钓上了一条大马林鱼,但这鱼实在太大,把他的小船在海上拖了三天才筋疲力尽,被他杀死了绑在小船的一边,在归程中一再遭到鲨鱼的袭击,最后回港时只剩下鱼头鱼尾和一条脊骨。这虽然是一个故事简单、篇幅不大的作品,但含义丰富,很多教师把它作为英雄主义教育的教材,推荐给广大学生,使之成为经久不衰的畅销书。

  He always thought of the sea as la mar03 which is what peoplecall her in Spanish when they love her. Sometimes those who loveher say bad things of her but they are always said as though she werea woman. Some of the younger fishermen, those who used buoysas floats for their lines and had motorboats, bought when the sharklivers had brought much money, spoke of her as la mar which ismascuhne. They spoke of her as a contestant or a place or evenan enemy. But the old man always thought of her as feminine andas something that gave or withheld great favors, and if she did wildor wicked things it was because she could not help them. Themoon affects her as it does a woman, he thought.  He was rowing steadily and it was no effort for him since hekept well within his speed and the surface of the ocean was flat exceptfor the occasional swirls of the current. He was letting the current doa third of the work and as it started to be hght he saw he was alreadyfurther out than he had hoped to be at this hour.  ……
