随着语篇语言学逐渐兴起并广泛地应用于翻译研究，语篇逐渐成了国内外翻译理论研究和翻译实践的关注点。从语篇视角研究翻译必须体现出语篇的衔接性和连贯性，而主位推进模式体现出了语篇的宏观组织结构，是保证语篇衔接性与连贯性的重要手段，也是译者解读源语语篇和构建译语语篇时的重要参照。本书简要回顾了有关主位、主位结构、主位推进和主位推进模式的研究成果，以及这些主位相关理论在语篇翻译研究中的应用，发现目前的相关探讨多为理论上的思辨，辅以少量例证，而缺少实证性的研究。本书在描写译学的总体框架下细致观察具体的翻译文本，并在此基础上描述现代汉语散文语篇英译过程中主位推进模式的转换，总结其转换规律，进而分析其深层次的制约因素，研究过程中采用了定性研究和定量研究相结合的方法。
