Once the flame appeared near the road and I could observe thedriver making a strange construction of stones around it. Anothertime I saw him standing between me and the flame， but he did notseem to obstruct i it.
Then another time the driver stopped the coach and went evenfarther away. The horses began to tremble. I could not understandwhy since the wolves had stopped howling. 2 But just then themoon came out from behind some black clouds and I saw aroundus a circle of wolves. All at once， with the appearance of themoon， they began to howl.
I shouted for the driver and tried to scare the wolves away. Heappeared and shouted some command and waved his arms. Thewolves moved away.
This was so strange that I was too afraid to move or speak.Then we travelled for an endlessly long time. Suddenly， I sawthat we had arrived in the courtyard of a vast 3 ruined castle.
I must have fallen asleep because I did not notice our arrival atthe Counts castle. When the coach stopped the driver jumpeddown and helped me out and then jumped back on the coach anddrove away.
What was going to happen？ What kind of people lived here？ Wasthis the usual kind of thing that happened to a solicitor who was sentout to explain the purchase 4 of a London estate 5 to a foreigner？ 6
Just then I heard the massive 7 door opening. Inside， stood atall old man with a long white moustache and all dressed in black.
