张岱年，原名宇同，别名季同，出生于北京，河北献县人。中国现代哲学家、哲学史家。毕业于北京师范大学，历任清华大学哲学系教授、北京大学哲学系教授、清华大学思想文化所所长、中国科学院哲学研究所兼职研究员、中国哲学史学会会长等。长期从事中国哲学史研究，著作等身，有极高的造诣和广泛的建树。其代表作《中国哲学大纲》至今仍是中国哲学专业的必读书目。

《中国古典哲学概念范畴要论》撰写于1981年—1987年，中文版于1989年由中国社会科学出版社首次出版，是张岱年先生几十年来研思探索中国古典哲学概念范畴体系之总结性著作。本书与《中国哲学大纲》共同组成了国学大师——张岱年先生对中国哲学范畴研究的成果。本书选取了中国古典哲学中起主导作用，且意义较深奥难解、历代歧义较多的60组概念范畴，以条目形式呈现。每则条例皆引证原始文献，详述历代各家对其理解发挥，循名责实。是一部体例独特、便于查阅的中国哲学基本理论著作。
