　　算盘是旧时中国传统的计算工具，迄今已有几千年的历史。算盘的英语对应名称为拉丁语abacus，源自古希腊语abax，其原意为“计算数目用的板子”。
　　与中国传统算盘上下拨动木珠不同的是，古希腊人在石板或木板上刻上一道道的槽，槽内放有圆石，通过前后拨动槽内的圆石来进行计算。

　　abet 源于at bait（饵），有“引诱”的意思，用饵去引诱，不受“煽动”才怪呢！在十六世纪的英国，流行一种“纵狗斗熊”(Bear-baiting)的游戏。在游戏中，熊被绑在一个固定的位置，人们放任狗去攻击熊，以致最终熊被狗撕咬而死。在狗不断疯狂地扑向熊的时候，观众总会高声呐喊“sic’em”或是“go get’em”，即去咬之意，这个做法就叫做 abet the dogs。abet如今的常用义“教唆”、“煽动”、“怂恿”也就由此而来。
　　通常，我们还将abet与aid连用，写作“aid and abet”，作为法律术语，其意思为“伙同作案”。
