以纤毛虫为对象的研究一直是国际上基础生物学和相关应用学科所关注的重要热点之一。在过去的30年中，作者所在研究团队开展了对我国纤毛虫自由生活类群的摸清家底性的研究，该研究覆盖了温带和热带海区、各类土壤、淡水和湿地生境，系统介绍了我国自由生活腹毛亚纲纤毛虫的多样性和形态学。本专著记录了在我国有分布记录的隶属于27科91属的201个物种，提供了全部种类的详细形态描述、形态图（活体及纤毛图式）、分类地位、采集地、生境及标本存放等信息，并对所隶属的属级及以上阶元的特征、检索表、研究历史、前人工作和分类系统等进行了系统的回顾。 本书可为从事纤毛虫学、细胞学、分类学和系统学研究的同行提供专业级的参考。
