Review of Global Change Research
This volume collects 15 articles covering research progress in several directions and strategic development in global change studies. Included here is a paper summarizing the recent scientific debates on global warming and revealing various evidence that points toward human activities as the primary cause of the climate warming over the past 30 years. A second paper sends a strong signal to our society that human activities in the 21st century will cause irreversible climate change over a millennium time scale. Based on an assessment of existing research efforts, four thematic priorities of global change research in China have been identified in one article and cross-disciplinary research and international collaborations are strongly called for. In another paper, a more detailed research plan on climate change monitoring and modeling has been proposed to improve our understanding of the scientific issues involved. Several papers have been devoted to progresses achieved on some theoretical and modeling aspects of terrestrial ecosystem science that emphasizes on the interactions among climate change, and urbanization and land use policies. A taxation strategy has been proposed to ensure sustainable development while engaging in clean development in developing countries.
