Garden Crime
Never say, “oops.“Always say, ”Ah, interesting. ”
~Author Unknown
Now that we’ve retired and live in the country,I have finally started gardening, as I’ve wanted to all my life. I love it, and I’m learning a lot. My husband likes to help out. He often comes home with plants he’s found along the side of the road.
Two years ago he came home with a plant about fifteen inches tall. He told me he had found a whole field of them. As always, I faithfully planted it in front of our house in a nice, sunny spot. It grew quickly, and I had a lot of admirers—people even took pictures. But I was disappointed because it produced no flowers. That was unfortunate. I wanted a flowering bush in that spot.
As I was digging it up to transplant it, a very nice police officer stopped and asked me where I had
found that plant.
“You can have it if you want it,” I told him. “It doesn’t produce any flowers and I have no use for it. My husband says there’s an entire field of them, so if you want more, he can tell you where to find them.”
“Thank you, ma’am,” he replied. “I think I would like to talk with your husband.” He waited in his car in front of our house while I kept puttering in the garden, feeling rather strange.
Finally, my husband arrived home. When asked by the police officer where more of these “beautiful” plants could be found, my husband said, “I don’t remember!”
Well, you can imagine my horror when the policeman informed us we were growing marijuana, which of course is against the law. But, since we are in our seventies, to my relief, he believed my husband’s loss of memory and we weren’t arrested! And, to my delight, the police officer dug up the plant himself and took it away, saving me the work!
The next time my husband goes on plant foraging expeditions, I’m sending along a plant identification book. Who knows what he could bring home?
