《英语基础写作教程》是按照高等学校英语专业英语教学大纲的要求，结合编者的教学经验以及国内外对英语写作教学的研究成果编写而成。本教材的主旨是通过英语写作课堂教学，能够帮助学生建立起用英语写作的信心，熟悉英语写作的过程，把握常见文本（如叙述、说明性的短文）的语篇结构和语言特点，避免常见错误。本书共有三章，三十个单元，包括写作过程的主要环节，即：构思（第一章），写出初稿（第二章），修改、编辑和校对（第三章）。所选范文生动有趣、语言地道，便于学生模仿和掌握各种文体的基本特征，形成用英语思考和写作的习惯。在每个步骤给学生提供有针对性的帮助和指点，每一个环节所给出的核对清单便于学生自查、互查，带着批判性的眼光来修改自己和同学的习作，有重点地掌握和落实每个环节的要点。此外，每一单元后面都配有一定数量的练习，并有答案，以供学习者巩固所学知识。
