Shanxi Province, with as long a history as 5,000 years, is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization, whose developmental course has left behind a myriad of historical relics all over the province. Now there are over 35,000 sites featuring immovable relics, among which are 500 odd brick & stone pagodas and 18,118 ancient structures of different dynastic periods. And more than 70% of all the extant wooden structures built before the 13th century in China is found here as well. Unique in style and distinct in shape, many of these ancient constructions make the only surviving sample buildings of a particular period in the history of Chinese architectural art. Hence, they all have distinctive artistic features and appreciable cultural value.
This book briefly introduces a choice selection of representative ancient buildings of different types and sculptures and mural paintings within in the hope that it may unfold the accomplishments of ancient architectural art in Shanxi and their profound cultural connotations.
