本书在系统功能语言学框架下从Matthiessen的“语域类型学”视角研究英语语法系统中的投射系统。首先搜集代表两个语域类型（新闻报道及学术期刊论文）的语篇构成两个小型语料库，从中提取出所有投射结构；然后以系统功能语法框架下的投射系统为标准对投射结构进行语法特征标注；最后，通过对比分析，发现两组语料库投射结构的异同，进而推导出新闻报道与学术论文通过投射实现语篇目的的功能差异。在此基础上，把分析结果带入两个语域的三维特征（语场、语旨、语式）下进行诠释，寻找构成投射语域类型差异的语境驱动因素。
